and all the voices shall breathe, speak, and be still
prompted by Labshul to respond to Helene Aylon z”l ‘s art ‘The Liberation of G-d’, as part of their Reveal-a-thon event, 31 may 2020.
Helene Aylon saw her work to liberate G-d from ungodly patriarchal projections and definitions. She used a pink dash for all the different silenced, marginalised voices. She used to say that we call the Torah, The Five Books of Moses, תורת משה, not The Five Books of God. G-d needs to be liberated. I took this prompt and made a book from of 5 parts, reminiscent of Helene’s notebooks. I’ve been working with the imagery of writing being a tension between Black and White Fire. Here this tension is interlaced with pink thread. But even the pink dash disappears. The Torah of G-d will be when all voices can speak, and know the still small silence of revelation. I was fortunate to have met Helene a few times, and had work in shows with her. She was a mentor and friend. while making this piece, I remembered the various conversations I had with her over the years. I think that’s why this piece turned out less of a jumping off from a prompt, and more of a homage. I miss her. |
